Health officials in Florida report a significant increase in cases of Vibrio vulnificus, a deadly flesh-eating bacteria, with 74 cases and 13 fatalities this year, compared to 46 cases and 11 deaths last year. The increase is attributed to hurricane activity, which contaminates floodwaters with the bacteria. The bacteria is especially dangerous to people with open wounds, liver disease, or compromised immune systems.
