Degradation Of Indian River Lagoon Causes Massive Manatee Deaths

The Indian River Lagoon, a sanctuary for manatees, has been polluted by nitrogen and phosphorus contamination for decades due to lack of regulation on major industries. This pollution has caused the elimination of seagrass, the manatees’ main food source, resulting in a starvation die-off of hundreds of manatees over two years. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection acknowledges the concern but denies the measures aren’t working, citing slow environmental change.
