Dr. Elroy Avery, the first mayor of New Port Richey, had a remarkable career before retiring to Florida at the age of 75. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, became a high school principal, Ohio state senator, and authored several books. Upon moving to New Port Richey, he founded the public library, became president of the First State Bank, and was instrumental in the city’s incorporation.
