Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed eliminating property taxes, a move that could disproportionately harm public schools and local governments. The proposal would create a $55 billion shortfall and would have to be put to voters through a constitutional amendment. The idea isn’t new, but DeSantis has broken with past precedent by saying the shortfall wouldn’t be offset with a tax increase elsewhere. The Legislature doesn’t have control over property taxes, and the proposal wouldn’t happen until 2026 at the earliest.
