A moderate level fire has been detected in the Starkey Wilderness Preserve despite the fire danger meter showing otherwise. Ross Kirtley, a frequent visitor to the preserve, expresses concern about the potential for the fire to spread quickly. In 2017, more than 2000 acres burned and smoke filled nearby schools. Pasco County Fire Chief Ryan Guynn confirms they managed to contain the fire without damage to homes, but did have to shut down part of the Suncoast Expressway. Guynn stresses the importance of controlled burns to eliminate dried-out vegetation and debris, as it can fuel fires.
