Frederick Robert Sass was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1871. He studied art in Paris and St. Louis, married Ollie May Warden in 1901, and later pursued a career in the hospitality and restaurant business. In 1911, Sass opened the Sass Open Door Restaurant in Kansas City that served meals to workers and needy people. By 1912, he moved to New Port Richey, Florida, where he purchased a hotel that he expanded and improved. He eventually sold the hotel in 1920, but continued to operate other hotels and businesses in New Port Richey until his death in 1945.
