Hurricanes making landfall along the Gulf of Mexico have become more intense due to warmer seas, as shown by a Tampa Bay Times analysis. This is largely because tropical cyclones transform heat from the ocean surface into wind movement, allowing storms to spin faster in warmer waters. At least 3 out of every 4 major hurricanes to form in the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico have traveled over record-hot waters in the past 25 years.
