Largest and Most Important Road Project in Pasco County Completes Construction

The Florida Department of Transportation has announced the completion of the $43 million SR 54 widening project, which transformed a two-lane road to a four-lane divided highway in Pasco County, Florida. The project widened 4.5 miles of SR 54 and added a sidewalk on the north side and a 10-foot-wide multiuse trail on the south side. The widening was necessary due to the area’s booming development and significant obstacles such as supply chain issues due to the pandemic. The project was originally planned to be completed in 2022 but had to overcome some significant challenges. A new contractor, Cone & Graham, finished the project, and all through-lanes on S.R. 54 were opened to traffic in late October. The remaining turn lanes at intersections with multiple turn lanes were opened to traffic in December. The final cleanup followed in January. This project is the fourth major road project in the Wesley Chapel area the county and FDOT have completed in the last five years, at a combined cost of just over $200 million. The 6-mile extension of S.R. 56 from Wiregrass Ranch to Zephyrhills and the diverging diamond interchange at S.R. 56/I-75 were also completed in the last few years. More is on the way, as plans to widen Wesley Chapel Boulevard and Old Pasco Road are underway.
