A 1,000-pound manatee named Shantay died from drowning at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park after employees left her unattended during a pool drainage. The incident was a result of improper handling procedures and pre-existing injuries from a boat strike. The state wildlife officials listed the probable cause of death as ‘human related’.
