Pasco County is launching a trial of the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) to reduce populations of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which spread serious diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. The SIT method involves sterilizing male mosquitoes and releasing them in selected areas to compete with wild males, leading to a gradual decline in the mosquito population. The trial aims to evaluate the technique’s effectiveness and is a part of the county’s integrated mosquito management program.
