For over 35 years, the Rivers family has been the primary reason elaborate floats are part of the Gasparilla Parade of Pirates in Tampa. The family owns 14 floats and it takes two years to design and build a modern float. The parade has 115 floats in total on Saturday, some made by corporations or community groups and others by the 53 Gasparilla krewes. The Rivers kids and grandkids are usually roped into working during Gasparilla season, along with more than 40 seasonal workers.
