The Story Of The Chasco Fiesta

In 1922, Gerben DeVries, a postmaster in New Port Richey, Florida, discovered a glazed clay cylinder along the shore of the Pithlachascotee River that contained a scroll signed by Padre Luis. The scroll told the story of the unconverted Calusa tribe of Native Americans and the Spanish nobleman and soldier DeValla, who was charged by the king of Spain to subdue them. Gerben’s discovery sparked a celebration in the town, which became the first Chasco Fiesta.
