A trash-capture device called Watergoat has been installed at Bear Creek to prevent plastic and other debris from entering the Gulf of Mexico. The device is a floating boom that catches things that are floating on top of the water, while allowing fish and other wildlife to travel underneath. The equivalent of two garbage trucks’ worth of plastic escapes into the ocean every minute, and most of it is not from people deliberately dumping trash in a waterway.
