Florida Updates SNAP to Exclude Sugary, Ultra-Processed Foods

Florida’s SNAP program has added new restrictions effective Monday, banning the purchase of soda, energy drinks, candy and ultra-processed desserts with EBT cards. The change, aimed at improving nutrition for low-income households, will last at least until April 19, 2028. Eligible shoppers can still buy the same benefit amount and shop at approved stores. Exclusions include all carbonated sodas, high‑caffeine energy drinks, sugar‑ and artificial‑sweetened candy, and packaged sweet foods. Allowed items remain plain sparkling water, high‑juice drinks with low added sugar and other nutritious foods. The state claims the move aligns the program with its goal of combating hunger and malnutrition. Beneficiaries are advised to use the federal locator tool to find participating retailers.
