Hernando County Responds to Unstable Chemical Discovery at Local Museum Site

Hernando County Fire Rescue received a call shortly after 8 a.m. regarding a potential hazard at the museum located at 601 Museum Court. The sheriff’s office responded to the scene soon after the initial report was made by emergency dispatchers. Officials identified the substance in question as an old pharmaceutical container dating back to the late 1800s or early 1900s. The container reportedly held picric acid, which was once commonly used as an antiseptic and pain reliever for burns. However, experts warn that this chemical can become highly unstable when it crystallizes over time. According to Noehuis, the crystallization process apparently turns the substance into an explosive material requiring careful handling. Emergency crews are managing the situation to ensure public safety while dealing with this historical hazard.
