Kirkland Ranch Academy of Innovation has officially launched its first high school athletic programs this fall, ending years where students had to compete at other schools. The public magnet school started with volleyball and two cross country teams, utilizing a brand new gymnasium and locker room facilities. Principal Danielle Castro expressed excitement about the opportunity for students to build school traditions and compete on their own campus. More than 30% of the student body had previously competed athletically at other schools in the Wesley Chapel area before this year. The administrative staff includes former athletes who helped convince seniors to switch allegiances and join the new programs. Additional sports including basketball, wrestling, cheerleading, and weightlifting are scheduled to debut in winter and spring seasons.
