Pasco County is installing nearly 13 miles of sidewalks to enhance safety for students walking or biking near schools. Parents and school officials have long emphasized the need for improved pedestrian infrastructure in areas with busy streets. The project will benefit 19 schools and surrounding communities by filling gaps in existing walkways. Commissioner Seth Weightman has championed these projects since 2022, when courtesy busing was eliminated, forcing families to manage student transportation themselves. Officials have secured over $22 million in funding from federal, state, and local sources for safe routes to schools initiatives. The new sidewalks will not only protect students but also provide benefits for residents who use the paths for exercise or walking their dogs.
