The Pasco County school district has eliminated nearly 500 positions for the upcoming fall semester due to declining enrollment and anticipated budget reductions. The cuts span administrative roles, instructional staff, and school-related personnel, with some positions removed because of school closures or mergers. Despite these reductions, district officials confirm that no current employees face layoffs as retirements and resignations have already created openings. Most displaced workers have secured new roles within the district, allowing the hiring freeze to be lifted. However, only 44 teaching vacancies remain available compared to hundreds previously when property tax increases boosted salaries. School board leadership is now seeking voter approval for a November referendum to renew local-option property taxes needed to fund competitive teacher salaries and maintain staffing levels. The district also retains about 50 additional teaching positions as a buffer against unexpected enrollment fluctuations or other unforeseen circumstances.
