Pasco Sheriff Bloodhounds Receive Protective Vests From Donor Group

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office is set to equip its six bloodhounds with bullet and stab-resistant vests through a donation from the nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s. Deputy Christina Demas expressed relief that this new protective gear will allow her dogs to work more safely in dangerous situations during searches for missing people or criminal suspects. These vests, which cost approximately $1,800 each, are funded entirely by donations and represent a first for the bloodhound unit, though patrol dogs already wear similar protection. The bloodhounds often begin tracking cases several hours after a disappearance, as their scent is stronger on the ground over time. One notable bloodhound named Cletus has proven highly effective in the field despite his relaxed demeanor off duty, once locating a murder suspect hiding in bushes five hours after an incident. Handlers reward successful dogs with treats like Spam, and officials expect the bloodhounds to adapt well to the vests while monitoring their comfort in Florida’s heat. The protective equipment is expected to arrive within the next ten weeks as part of ongoing efforts to improve K9 unit safety and effectiveness.
