Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco has informed county commissioners that he will terminate an agreement allowing the Sheriff’s Office to place license plate detection systems in county rights of way. The interlocal agreement between the Pasco Sheriff’s Office and the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners will end on September 30, 2026, according to a letter from Nocco. Nocco made this decision after listening to discussions during commission meetings on August 11 and August 25, noting that it appeared a majority of commissioners no longer supported the agreement which was originally approved unanimously by the board on December 10, 2024. The sheriff defended the agency’s use of license plate readers, stating they help deputies solve crimes and locate missing or endangered children and adults, including human trafficking victims. According to Nocco, Florida law allows license plate reader data to be retained for up to two years, but the Sheriff’s Office limited retention to 30 days and restricted searches to felony investigations and certain misdemeanors.
