St. Leo Residents Oppose New Housing Development Proposal

A planned housing development in St. Leo, Florida, has ignited community opposition due to concerns about irreversible changes to the town’s character. The proposal by Ryan Homes would convert the historic Abbey Golf Course into 628 residences, potentially doubling the population of the 2,000-person town. Local landmarks like the 60-year-old golf course and proximity to Saint Leo University make residents wary of increased traffic and loss of open space. University President Jim Burkee alerted students to attend a town commission meeting to voice opposition, as the change would affect the area’s peaceful, resort-like atmosphere.
