The Florida State Board of Education has authorized a new turnaround plan for Gulf Middle School in Pasco County, which has received a D grade for three consecutive years despite district efforts. The plan gives the district four options: continue its own turnaround, convert the school to a charter, hand it over to the turnaround firm MGT, or close it. MGT, a Tampa-based consulting firm, would provide leadership coaches, subject specialists, and monitoring services if the school fails to achieve a C grade this year. Superintendent John Legg expressed confidence the school will improve, aiming for a B or even an A, and noted the school will move to a new building in the fall. The district hopes the external firm will not be needed, recalling MGT’s success turning around Cox Elementary last year.
