A local nonprofit organization called Brainstorms NPR, Inc. is seeking to transform a vacant city-owned building in downtown New Port Richey into a hands-on science discovery center for children. The former Pasco County Health Department building has been empty for about five years and the group wants to use it for STEAM education programs. Brainstorms has previously brought hands-on programs to libraries and community events but never had a permanent location. The city recently issued a request for proposals meaning the nonprofit will compete with developers who may want commercial uses like restaurants or retail instead. Plans include interactive science exhibits, engineering activities, and even a hurricane simulator while preserving an existing mural on the building. Brainstorms leaders believe New Port Richey needs more family-focused attractions beyond what currently exists for adults. The organization plans to present its proposal to the city council on August 18th when officials decide the future of this prominent downtown property.
