Pasco County Fire Rescue responded to a house fire in the 4000 block of Grouper Lane on Wednesday, where heavy fire and smoke were observed. Despite the crews’ quick efforts to control the blaze, the home was completely destroyed and one dog died in the incident. Fire investigators determined that the fire was accidental and originated from a lithium-ion battery that had been recently purchased for an e-bike. The occupant had bought an aftermarket battery which did not fit the bike correctly and was left disconnected after charging. Shortly after, the occupant noticed the battery venting flames before it caused the house to catch fire. The Red Cross is currently assisting four adults and two children who were displaced by the disaster. Officials warn that lithium-ion batteries can be dangerous when damaged, incompatible, or not used as intended, recommending the use of manufacturer-approved batteries and avoiding aftermarket replacements.
