Elderly Driver Dies in Pasco County Tesla Autopilot Crash Investigation Continues

An 87-year-old Wesley Chapel man died when his Tesla Model Y SUV crashed in Pasco County while operating on Autopilot mode. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 8 p.m. Tuesday on Overpass Road when the vehicle left the roadway, struck an electrical box, and then submerged in a pond. This fatal crash joins several other reported accidents involving Tesla’s Autopilot system across the country. Less than a year ago, a Miami jury found Tesla partly responsible for a deadly 2019 Florida crash involving Autopilot, ordering the company to pay over $240 million in damages. In 2023, a Tesla driver was ordered to pay more than $23,000 in restitution for fatal California crash where the vehicle was using Autopilot. The current Pasco County incident remains under active investigation by authorities as questions about autonomous driving technology safety continue to surface.
