An 87-year-old Wesley Chapel man died Tuesday night after his Tesla Model Y SUV, operating in autopilot mode, left Overpass Road and crashed. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. when the vehicle departed the roadway east of Infinite Drive. The Tesla struck an electrical box before continuing into a pond where it became completely submerged. First responders transported the driver to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A 75-year-old female passenger from Wesley Chapel also sustained injuries but is expected to survive with non-life-threatening conditions. Investigators have not determined the cause of the crash or released the identities of those involved. The circumstances surrounding how deep the pond was and how long victims remained in the submerged vehicle before rescue remain unclear.
