Fivay High School Fire Academy Receives Donated Gear From Local Departments

More than 70 students at Fivay High School’s Fire Science Academy in Pasco County are training to become firefighters with the support of local fire departments. The program, led by retired firefighter Lt. Steven Smith, covers essential skills such as hose line evolutions, search and rescue, and vertical ventilation. In the past, the academy struggled with a shortage of protective equipment including bunker gear and helmets. Pasco County recently donated 25 fire helmets valued at approximately $10,000 to help address these needs. Clearwater Fire & Rescue also contributed 20 sets of bunker gear, each costing around $2,500, significantly reducing the financial burden on the school. Deputy Chief David Kadau emphasized that passing down used equipment helps invest in the future of the fire service and supports community partners who may not afford new items. The donated gear carries historical significance for students like senior Jordan Gilio, who values wearing equipment previously used by active firefighters on real emergency calls.
