Florida Highway Patrol Investigates Fatal Crash Involving Two Teens In New Port Richey

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a serious crash that occurred early Sunday morning in New Port Richey. A trooper observed a Chevy Traverse traveling at 74 mph in a 45 mph zone on State Road 54 and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to comply and fled, eventually reaching speeds of 115 mph before being pursued by law enforcement. East of Old County Road, the trooper executed a PIT maneuver that caused the vehicle to rotate onto the south shoulder where it collided with a utility pole and tree. Both occupants were 15-year-old boys from New Port Richey who were not wearing seatbelts and had alcoholic beverages in their possession. The passenger died from his injuries while the driver was transported to the hospital in serious condition. Authorities expect charges to be filed against the teenage driver once he is released from medical care.
