Homeowners in Land O’ Lakes, Florida are expressing concerns about speeding drivers in their Lake Padgett Estates neighborhood. Residents on Forest View Drive have placed numerous slow-down signs in their yards following incidents where a mailbox and child safety sign were damaged by vehicles. Grace Robinson, an 11-year resident, explains that while the unposted speed limit is 30 mph, even speeds at or below that limit feel too fast for the residential area with many pedestrians, cyclists, and children. Pasco County’s Traffic Operations conducted a speed study in March, finding average speeds of 28 mph, below the residential limit. However, county officials acknowledge they sometimes recommend lowering speed limits when roadway conditions warrant. Neighbors are pushing for traffic calming measures, particularly speed bumps, which can be requested through the county’s special assessment program requiring at least five homeowner petitions before a study is conducted.
