Several local fishing captains report excellent conditions for inshore species throughout Pasco County waters. Capt. Josh Fritz notes that tarpon pods are active north of Hernando Beach, with fish ranging from 75 to 150 pounds being caught on live crabs and soft plastic baits. He expects current pods to move offshore soon, but new groups migrating from the south should arrive through June. At Anclote Key, Capt. Cody Albright has been landing impressive super slams that include tarpon, snook, redfish, and trout all in a single trip. The west side of the island has proven particularly productive for these four species with live pinfish and grunts working well for snook. Capt. Matt Cowden highlights that Pasco’s grass flats are currently loaded with trout, with some trips seeing as many as 100 fish landed on live sardines or jigs with soft plastic tails. He also reports significant tarpon activity offshore and notes the presence of blacktip sharks that readily take artificial baits. The Rusty Bucket reports a spike in snook activity as water temperatures warm, with beach fishing at Anclote Key being particularly productive during the annual spawn period. Redfish action remains solid on flats near oyster bars and mangroves, while big trout are found in deeper pockets around Anclote Key and the north sand bar. Tarpon numbers have been better to the south of Pasco waters recently, but they remain present and take live pass crabs, pinfish, and small grunts effectively. The Tarpon Trading Company reports fair numbers of keeper-sized trout being caught near the Anclote power plant outfall canal on live shrimp or jigs with soft plastic tails.
