Pasco County Approves One-Year Moratorium on Data Center Construction in Unincorporated Areas

Pasco County commissioners have unanimously approved a one-year moratorium on data center construction and development within unincorporated areas of the county. This measure was advanced last month and passed again during Tuesday’s meeting, allowing officials time to review public concerns regarding environmental and financial impacts. The pause does not apply to incorporated cities, which retain the authority to make their own decisions on such developments. Critics have raised worries about the significant energy demands, water consumption, and noise generated by backup systems in these facilities. Conversely, supporters argue that data centers are essential for meeting growing AI demand and can serve as positive economic drivers for the region. Currently, only one large multimillion-dollar data center project is approved in the Tampa Bay area, located in Fort Meade, though it still requires further planning before construction begins.
