Pasco County Schools Require Kindergarten Students to Be Potty-Trained Before Enrollment

Pasco County Schools announced a new policy requiring kindergarten students to be potty-trained before the start of the school year, as district leaders report an increase in students unable to use restrooms independently. Superintendent John Legg stated during a school board meeting that teachers are overwhelmed by students requiring diaper changes or bathroom assistance, emphasizing this should not be their responsibility. The policy allows exemptions for students with developmental disabilities or special needs, though advocates like Jessica Silber expressed concerns about potential segregation into separate classrooms instead of providing additional staffing. Pediatrician Dr. Robin Hauser noted most children achieve potty-training by age 3.5 to 4, though medical or developmental conditions may delay milestones, and regular pediatric checkups are recommended to assess readiness.
