Florida voters will decide in November on a property tax referendum that would significantly increase homestead exemptions, potentially reducing property taxes for homeowners. The proposed measure would raise the exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 by 2027 and further to $250,000 by 2028. However, the Pasco County Mosquito Control District warns that these tax cuts could severely impact their funding. The district relies almost exclusively on ad valorem taxation for its operations across 747 square miles of Pasco County. Executive Director Adriane Rogers states that one-fifth of their budget would be affected in the first year if the measure passes, with one-third impacted by the second year. This could lead to reductions in mosquito surveillance, disease monitoring, and control services that protect residents from diseases like West Nile virus and dengue. The district currently employs 50 full-time staff members whose jobs could also be at risk. Rogers emphasizes the importance of educating voters about these potential consequences before they cast their ballots.
