Pasco Student Wins Civics Scholarship for Public Service and Advocacy

Florida schools are emphasizing civics education as the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary. In Pasco County, the new Civics Scholar Program recognizes students’ commitment to public service. Sydney LeBaron, a Mitchell High School senior, is the first recipient of the district’s civics scholarship. Her interest in civics stems from personal experiences, including her mother’s murder, shaping her goal to become a prosecutor. The program aims to inspire students amid challenges like low pass rates on the Florida Civics Literacy Exam. LeBaron, interning at the state attorney’s office, plans to attend Florida State University and law school, supported by a scholarship.
