Heavy rain recently flooded roads across parts of Pinellas County, but Tampa Bay Water officials caution that these coastal downpours alone cannot resolve the ongoing Phase III drought. While drivers faced hazardous conditions on several streets, Warren Hogg, chief science officer for Tampa Bay Water, emphasized that sustained rainfall is needed specifically in the Upper Alafia and Upper Hillsborough River basins. Most of this summer’s precipitation has fallen along the coast, which helps reduce water demand but fails to replenish regional water stores. The regional reservoir currently holds only 2.4 billion gallons, representing approximately 15% of its total capacity. Officials aim to increase storage to 15.5 billion gallons by October 1, marking the end of the rainy season. Rain in inland watersheds is essential for filling wetlands, increasing river flows, and allowing water capture in regional reservoirs.
