TECO Files Data Center Plans

Florida public electric companies have submitted plans under a new state law designed to prevent large energy users like data centers from driving up costs for residential customers. The legislation requires these massive operations to cover the full expense of equipment, power plants, and grid infrastructure needed to support their facilities. Tampa Electric filed its proposal outlining strict requirements for any large industrial customer seeking connection to its system. While Duke Energy was the first provider to submit such a plan in April, other companies are still awaiting regulatory approval for their filings. State regulators are currently reviewing all submissions from power providers across Florida with decisions expected later this year or early next year.

Key Points:

  • Florida public electric companies must file plans detailing how they will handle large-load energy users by a state-mandated deadline.
  • Large industrial customers like data centers must pay full price for all equipment, power plants, lines and poles needed to supply their facilities.
  • Tampa Electric currently serves no large load customers within its territory but is seeing interest from data centers wanting to expand into Florida.
