Unified Basketball Team Promotes Inclusion Between Schools

Shanna Brady and Sydnee Parkinson, teachers at Skybrooke K-8, have partnered with Bexley Elementary to create a unified basketball team for 20 students, split evenly between those with special needs and neurotypical peers. The program, set to compete in the Area 5 Special Olympics, focuses on fostering social skills and inclusion through weekly practices and school-day interactions. Coaches emphasize the team’s role in teaching life skills, with Brady noting its importance for both players and buddies. The initiative aims to maintain friendships amid school transfers and promote integration beyond athletics.
