A group of veterans in Land O Lakes, Florida, officially dedicated an American flag at their neighborhood clubhouse on Friday morning. The ceremony marked the culmination of a community effort that began earlier this year when residents requested permission from developer Lennar to install a flagpole. Although the request was initially denied, Tampa Bay 28 reporter Erik Waxler investigated the issue in February, prompting Lennar to reverse its decision and agree to cover the cost. The flagpole was installed in June, and dozens of residents gathered for the dedication ceremony just ahead of Independence Day. An American flag that once flew over the U.S. Capitol was raised while attendees sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Marine veteran Ed Michelson expressed pride in the community’s support, noting that 250 years as a nation they raised their flag at Angeline. Retired Army Colonel Brian O’Neil contributed a military patch to a time capsule and reflected on the significance of the moment for veterans in the community. His wife Melissa, who served as an Army nurse, praised the amazing community full of veterans supporting one another. With the flag officially dedicated, residents are now turning their attention to celebrating the Fourth of July with planned festivities including a golf cart parade.
