Florida Midwife Owes $12M; State Pushes Insurance Reform

A Florida midwife in Pasco County, Sizzly Auer, is allegedly responsible for a baby’s permanent injury during delivery and owes $12.2 million to the victim’s family. Auer’s history of false statements about her practice led to an insurance exemption, raising concerns about coverage for malpractice claims. The Florida Department of Health filed an administrative complaint alleging fraudulent representation. A state council is now proposing stronger proof‑of‑insurance requirements for midwives. The proposal aims to prevent future incidents where insurance status is unclear until after harm has occurred. The Family, represented by mother Victoria Vasser, continues to seek compensation for ongoing care. The Council of Licensed Midwifery is considering the recommendation and may act to improve safety regulations.
