A nine-year-old Pasco County boy named Dylan Shepherd is sharing his harrowing e-bike crash story to promote a new safety campaign launched by AAA and Tampa’s Muma Children’s Hospital. In April, Dylan was riding his electric bike at 20 mph with his father when he hit debris and flipped over the handlebars, resulting in multiple serious injuries including rib fractures, bruised lungs, and a torn spleen. Fortunately, Dylan was wearing a helmet with full facial protection which his family believes saved his life from even more severe head trauma. Pediatric surgeons at Muma Children’s Hospital report that e-bike accidents are causing significantly higher rates of traumatic brain injuries and other serious injuries compared to traditional bicycles. The hospital has seen nearly double the volume of e-bike related cases this year, with doctors warning that these incidents can require emergency surgery and months of recovery. AAA is partnering with the hospital on an “E-Ride Ready” campaign to raise awareness about proper safety gear and local riding laws before the summer season.
