Saint Leo University Wins First National Championship in Program History

Saint Leo University secured its first national championship in program history by defeating sixth-seeded McKendree University 5-2 in the NCAA Division II softball title game. The victory occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Chattanooga, Tennessee, marking a significant milestone for the Lions. Izzy LaRoche delivered a crucial two-run triple to left-center field during the top of the seventh inning, driving in two key insurance runs that helped seal the championship win. This achievement makes Saint Leo only the second Florida school to win the title since Florida Southern College claimed victory in 1993. Head coach Erin Kinberger praised her team as a gritty group built for success, emphasizing their mutual belief and resilience throughout the season. The Lions finished with an outstanding record of 54-3-1 after advancing to the championship game with a decisive 15-4 victory over McKendree on Tuesday. Strong defensive plays from center fielder Sydney Cline and second baseman Briana Neal were instrumental in maintaining the team’s momentum throughout the tournament.
