Pasco County Commissioners Approve Data Center Moratorium Hearing After Resident Outcry

Pasco County commissioners are proceeding with a second hearing on a proposed moratorium against large-scale data centers following significant public opposition. Dozens of residents attended the recent Board of County Commissioners meeting to express their concerns about potential environmental and health impacts. Attendees voiced worries regarding wildlife disruption, public health risks from noise pollution, energy consumption, overheating issues, and water conservation challenges in the region. Some residents emphasized Pasco County’s vulnerability to natural disasters and argued that data centers should be located in cooler states with better infrastructure. While most attendees opposed the facilities entirely, one developer presented plans for a facility that would use minimal water compared to typical establishments. District Chair Jack Mariano expressed satisfaction with the proactive approach taken by commissioners to protect citizens from excessive resource consumption. The next hearing on this topic is scheduled for July 14, with an additional hearing in Zephyrhills planned for June 22.
