Pasco County Halts Data Center Construction Amid Community Concerns Over Water And Flooding Risks

Pasco County commissioners are moving forward with a twelve-month moratorium on new data center construction following significant community opposition. Residents have raised serious concerns about excessive water consumption, constant noise pollution, and the potential for severe flooding in low-lying areas where these facilities might be built. The proposed freeze aims to allow officials time to thoroughly investigate how these massive operations would impact local water supplies, power grids, and nearby wildlife habitats. County staff presented detailed information explaining that neighboring counties like Hernando and Citrus have already implemented similar restrictions on data center development. Commission Chair Jack Mariano emphasized that leadership has carefully considered extensive feedback from citizens regarding the environmental and social impacts of such projects. While some areas of Florida are actively approving new data centers for their economic benefits, Pasco County is taking a more cautious approach to protect local resources. The final vote on this temporary ban will occur on July 14 after another public meeting where residents can provide additional input before officials implement the freeze.
