Local captains report that recent rains have pushed redfish out of backwaters and into areas around rocky points, bars, and island shorelines. While smaller fish have been landed recently, anglers are also catching some in the upper-slot size range using live sardines and pinfish as bait. Trout fishing has also been productive near grass bottoms and deep grass areas where fish hold at depths of 13 feet. Snook have been found on hard bottom points and near creek mouths, taking both cut bait and live sardines effectively. Scalloping conditions have improved significantly this year with good numbers on grass flats north of Bayport, though hunters must dodge occasional winds and storms. Offshore fishing has seen success with red snapper, grouper, and mangrove snapper using frozen sardines, squid, and shrimp as bait options.
