A 24-year-old Florida Department of Transportation road ranger was fatally struck while working a crash scene on Interstate 75 in Pasco County. The incident occurred around 8:28 p.m. on July 12 when the ranger was setting up lane closure procedures outside his vehicle at mile marker 274. An Acura MDX driven by Darren Christopher Jenkins, a 40-year-old from Bradenton, drove between the ranger’s vehicles and struck him. The driver was later arrested for DUI manslaughter after providing a breath sample showing an alcohol level of 0.334. FDOT expressed deep sadness over the loss and extended condolences to the ranger’s family, friends, and colleagues. Road Rangers play a vital role in Florida roadway safety by assisting motorists with various roadside services since the program began in 2000.
