Pasco County Shelter Launches Unique Summer Camp for Kids

Pasco County Animal Services hosted its inaugural summer camp, where twenty-five children aged five and older spent a week learning about animal shelter operations. Unlike typical camps focused on play, participants engaged in real work such as cleaning kennels, feeding animals, shadowing medical staff, and assisting with community partnerships. Veronica Alfaro Sanchez, the education coordinator, noted that this government-run program is unique compared to private shelters or rescues nationwide. The camp was initiated by Gina Botticello and director Gary Herrero, culminating in a graduation ceremony where participants received diplomas. One camper created a hand-drawn kennel card for Gweta, a German shepherd mix who subsequently found her forever home at an adoption event. Alfaro Sanchez expressed pride in the children’s resilience and their desire to help animals, noting many had parents who were already volunteers. The $50 camp was deemed a success, with plans already underway to return next year as part of efforts to make the shelter more family-friendly.
