Pasco County students are returning to school on August 13 with enhanced financial literacy skills acquired through a paid internship program at Achieva Credit Union. The initiative was conceived by Chad Mallo, an A+ Teacher and business educator at Angeline Academy of Innovation, who wanted to bridge classroom learning with real-world banking experiences. Inspired by the state’s financial literacy requirements, Mallo developed a program that allows students to practice banking transactions and customer communication during the summer months. Sam Ossa, one of the participating interns, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to develop soft skills that will benefit his future career choices. The Achieva Credit Union branch development manager emphasized their privilege in working with these young individuals and helping them grow professionally. Students who participate in this program also take an exam to earn a nationally recognized financial counselor certification upon completion. This work-based learning experience provides students with practical skills that many peers lack, giving them a competitive advantage as they return to the classroom for the new school year.
