Pasco County Weighs Roadside Memorial Safety and Grieving Families Needs

Roadside memorials honoring crash victims are common across Tampa Bay, but a recent complaint in Pasco County has sparked debate over their placement. Officials received a report about a memorial for four-year-old Kyzer Newsome on Eiland Boulevard in Zephyrhills, with the complainant citing potential driver distraction and visual clutter from multiple nearby memorials. Although county officials initially planned to remove the memorial due to safety concerns near the roadway, they paused those plans after public discussion highlighted the emotional significance of such tributes for grieving families. In response, Pasco County stated its goal is to develop a process that balances safety requirements with the needs of families honoring their loved ones. The Florida Department of Transportation already offers an approved program providing free memorial markers that read Drive Safely In Memory followed by the victim name, installed and maintained at no cost for one year. This official option prohibits additional decorations or ornaments that could interfere with maintenance or distract drivers, offering a structured alternative to informal roadside memorials.
