Pasco WWII Veteran Receives Hurricane Relief Home Renovations From Community Partners

A Pasco County World War II veteran named Fred Fritz Kojzar has received extensive home renovations following damage caused by the 2024 hurricanes. Several inches of water entered his Hudson home during the storms, requiring immediate removal of wet flooring that had remained unfinished for some time. A collaborative effort led by Rebuilding Together Greater Florida involved USAA, the American Red Cross, Community Foundation Tampa Bay, and Volunteer Florida to fund and complete the necessary repairs. Special attention was paid to creating level flooring without transitions since the elderly veteran uses a walker for mobility. Additional accessibility upgrades included installing grab bars throughout the house and converting the bathtub into a walk-in shower. The renovation team also installed new kitchen appliances catering to Kojzar’s passion for cooking. Neighbor Al Hiller described the veteran as a dedicated cook who fillets fresh fish he catches offshore for dinners shared with neighbors. Hiller recalled receiving postcards from Kojzar during World War II when the veteran was hospitalized with pneumonia in 1943, writing encouraging letters to his father about overcoming hardships. This historical perspective reveals the same resilient character that now helps the 101-year-old veteran bounce back from hurricane damage decades later. Kojzar himself stated that sitting idle does not align with his personality and that he prefers keeping things moving forward. His enduring spirit serves as inspiration to the community while restoring his home to a safe and functional living space.
