Saint Leo University Launches New Sober Housing Program This Fall

Saint Leo University is launching a new collegiate recovery program starting this fall semester, featuring dedicated sober housing designed to assist students struggling with addiction. The university is converting an existing campus dormitory into specialized living spaces where participants receive ongoing counseling and structured recovery programming. To qualify for the initiative, applicants must demonstrate six months of sobriety and agree to abide by strict community standards aimed at preventing relapse. A local businessman named Dewey Mitchell contributed one million dollars toward the program to honor his son, who tragically passed away from an overdose. The framework for this initiative was modeled after a successful program at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, emphasizing peer accountability and daily check-ins. University officials hope that these dedicated resources will attract new students who previously believed higher education was unattainable due to their recovery needs. Additionally, Mitchell is working to secure a ten million dollar endowment to ensure the program remains fully funded in the future.
